5 Characteristics of God from Creation...Genesis 1

5 Reflections on God’s Character from Creation

1.) Creation is About God

Creation tells us more about God than ourselves, which is a great foundation for our lives. Our lives are not our own, but given to us by God. Yet, the greatest life is the life spent getting to know more and more of God personally and intimately.

2.) God Makes Something Out of Nothing

Earth was without form. It was void. It was dark. This was the “clay” before the “pot”, if you will.

When Earth appeared void and empty and without purpose, God in fact created much within it.

3.) God Creates Order

God has established an order for this world. We see darkness and light; land and sea; ocean and sky; animals of air, land, and sea; humanity distinct from animals.

While this doesn’t seem like much, we acknowledge that there is a source of ultimate order in this world. Even in the midst of a culture that pushes relative truth and liberal motives, God’s established order has remained unchanged and will be the only thing that ultimately lasts.

There is no creation of coincidence out of random events, rather everything was made to happen intentionally.

4.) God Created Man

Again, seems like an obvious point. But the implication is that there is a higher authority to our humanity outside of ourselves. Humanity was created by another and there is, therefore, a purpose outside of what we can conjure up ourselves for our lives.

We are not in fact the master of our own souls.

5.) God Gave Man a Purpose

God is the one who created all. And when he had finished the climax of His creation, man, he then gave man something special: purpose. This isn’t just a purpose, like an occupation, but rather a privilege as well.

God gave the power to manage and have dominion over His creation to created man. God is still over all, but we have become co-managers of creation. God gave this purpose and privilege out of sheer grace.

Who are we, as humanity, to govern something created by God and not ourselves? Yet, it delights God, and He glorifies Himself, by doing so. It is a great grace for God to give us power to manage His creation.
